Jantar Mantar --> An Astronomical Marvel In Delhi

Situated in Delhi, Jantar Mantar built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1724 is a popular place to see. Its name reveals the purpose for which it was built. It is an instrument (Jantar/Yantra) that uses formulae (Mantra) to perform astronomical calculations. A collection of geometric devices were constructed to serve the following purpose:
  • Measuring time
  • Weather forecasting
  • Predict planetary movements and movements of the sun and the moon.
Jantar Mantar is undoubtedly an impressive example of ancient astronomy and speaks about the importance of time and engineering expertise. Arches and the angles makes it complex, interesting as well as tickle a sense of curiosity to know as to how this engineered marvel actually works. But a local guide can easily help you with that. These instruments also have specific names according to the size and the vision with which it was made. Samrat Yantra, the Ram Yantra, the Jayaprakash, and the Mishra Yantra are a few to mention.
An hour would be adequate time to explore Jantar Mantar. You can also relax in the garden around it or go to nearby popular market of Connaught Place, Janpath and Pallika Bazaar to shop and eat.
