Discover Delhi: Hop On To The HOHO Bus!

The grandeur of the historic city of Delhi cannot be experienced in just one day. Delhi, in its vicinity, holds many chronicles of India’s golden past. While some of them have become national heritages, the others still remain shrouded in isolation. Whether popular or not, the architectural heritages in the city remain destitute to the status of just old buildings. Forget about the tourists, not even the denizens of Delhi have seen them for once in their entire lives! This callous behaviour towards the glorious heritage is like an affront to our ancestors.
Whether it is the lack of knowledge about the historical sites or just the unavailability of transport or any other reason that has hindered your interest in Delhi’s history, it’s time to forget the past and get ready to explore the city in the most splendid way! Diligent efforts by the Government of Delhi to promote the architectural heritage have made it extremely convenient for everyone to experience the various historical delights with their own eyes. The concept of the HOHO bus was started by the tourism department for the tourists to experience Delhi in a very comfortable way by organising sightseeing tours across Delhi according to their preference.

This tour covers most of the museums, monuments, gardens, shopping bazars, hotels and galleries around the city. Entertaining tour guides are available at your service to make your journey joyous and memorable. A detailed guide of the routes of these buses is available at the government website, wherein you can choose your preferred route and book the tickets online.

Places To Gratify Midnight Hunger in Delhi

Not everyone is a morning person; not everyone likes waking up early. Some people just want to admire the beauty and quietness of the night. They are the night wanderers who set out on the road once everybody else calls it a day. A fairly large population of Delhi subsists during those odd hours of night when most of us are sleeping through our dreams. While many of them are awake by choice, for some it is their work. Different people, different reasons, but what’s common is their search for food at these wee hours! Finding food at midnight when half of the city is sleeping can be difficult. But thank God, there are a good number of food joints in Delhi which cater to the needs of this other half. So, if you are one of such night lover looking for food in the early hours, here is a list of some eateries which will serve you good at any hour!

Murthal-The Parantha Junction For Travellers

Call it a mere observation- but a traveler most likely turns out to be a foodie as well and a foodie is often a keen traveler. Food and Travel go hand in hand! For food, we need to travel and for travelling we need food! This unique combination is the sole reason behind the blooming success of food joints or simply the “Dhabas” on the highways. Whether while heading towards a far away destination or just covering the distance for food, people love to eat at these Dhabas. One such food heaven is the super-popular Dhaba at Murthal!
Located at a distance of 48 kilometres from Delhi, Murthal is one of the fastest growing villages of Sonepat. Despite of being a small village, it has successfully grown as the most popular highway eatery! Murthal is loved for its eternal variety of Paranthas which are absolutely irresistible. The food served here is so scrumptious that people plan out special road-trips just to gratify their taste buds at these Dhabas. These Dhabas have a very clean ambience and the food served is extremely hygienic.
Murthal can be deemed as a potential weekend getaway destination owing to the feasible distance and the mouth-watering food served here. The rustic beauty of a village can be very well enjoyed at the wide paddy fields and tube-wells nearby. There are also a number of farm houses at Murthal. The very popular Murthal Haveli is also situated at a close proximity. And the best part amongst everything, this place is open round the clock! So, if you haven’t tasted the paranthas of Murthal as yet, plan your trip right away!

Overseas Indians Celebrate Modi Victory

Finally the Lok Sabha Election results were out on 16th May and the results were very surprising. The exit polls had already predicted a victory for the BJP, but such a thumping victory was the surprising element for the Bharatiya Janata Party.  It is a very significant result as it is the first time in 30 years that a single party has won the majority alone. This also marks the end of coalition government era. With this, the people have already built up the hope for a new and better India.
The emphatic victory of Narendra Modi was celebrated not only in India but also in the various parts of the world, in different countries, among the Indian community.
It was a festive mood everywhere. It seemed as if the Indians were celebrating some important festival. Chandrakant Patel, President of Overseas Friends of the BJP, declared it as “Diwali moment for us”. And indeed on 16th May early Diwali was celebrated.
In the USA the mood was festive and full of excitement. The USA has one of the largest Gujarati population. Indian Americans here celebrated the win by lighting up diyas and taking out processions. In many cities in the USA, the BJP supporters had held “election watch parties”.
India becoming important to the world was more realised when the live counting was streamed on the screens of the busy Times Square in New York. In New Jersey the Indian street was closed for general parking on 16th May, so that it would be easier for the people to celebrate the victory. People smeared each other with colours and danced the night away. Sweets were distributed among people; New Modi Thali has been introduced in the various Gujarati restaurants. Even the Modi kurtas have gone up for sale in the various Indian shops. This was just a glimpse of the popularity of Narendra Modi among the Indian diaspora.
In Atlanta, an NGO called Global Indians for Bharat Vikas, run by Dhiru Shah, organised an event 2014 Bharat-BJP-NAMO Victory to congratulate Narendra Modi. More than 100 NRIs attended the event. They gathered together to celebrate India’s historic epoch win in the general elections. They wished Modi well and hoped that under his leadership India will rise to a strong economically and socially developed country.
Even in countries like Australia the victory celebrations went all night long. Many Indians staying in various countries have decided to put up big screens to watch live Modi’s swearing in as he accepts the mantle for the top position as the new Prime Minister of the world’s largest democratic country.
In countries like Canada and other parts of Asia, where there is substantial amount of Indian population, people visited each other’s house to celebrate the win. There were discussions wherever a few Indians met. The only topic of discussion was Modi and his win.
Meanwhile, the congratulatory messages for Narendra Modi flowed from the various quarters of the world. The US President Barack Obama broke the ice between the US and Modi by congratulating Modi on his historic win. He invited him to Washington and expressed his wish to work with him and strengthen the ties between both the countries.
The British Prime Minister David Cameron also wished Modi on his success. Also to join the list were Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They all wished Modi and the BJP party for their win.
Congratulatory messages also came from the opposition party. George Abraham, chairman of the Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC) also congratulated the BJP party. He said, “The people of India have spoken and they have thrown in their lot with BJP-led NDA and their verdict ought to be respected by all”. He also added, “It is also a tribute to India that has proven beyond any doubt that it is a vibrant democracy that facilitates a peaceful transition of power [...].”
But in a few countries there is not much excitement on the Modi win. In the Arab countries, Indian diaspora have a mixed reaction. Under Narendra Modi’s leadership, while some see this as a hope for a new India, others still have the fear of being marginalised for being the minority. This is the main reason why the NRIs living in the Gulf countries are not very upbeat on the election results.
But overall this victory of Narendra Modi has been marked as a global progress of India along with socio-economic development, giving hope to the NRIs as well as the people of India for a strong India.

Popular Mango Varieties in India

Summers are here and so are the infinite perks of this season! Summers not only bring in much more liveliness and zest into our lives but also open up a wide variety of opportunities for us. For some it gives them the freedom to wear their favorite clothes, for others it’s that time of the year when they can cheerfully enjoy their pool parties. But for me it defines the time when I can tantalizingly welcome the king of fruits- Mango!
Words fall short while even trying to describe my ineffable love for this fruit. Mango is probably the most variegated fruit of India. There are almost 500-1000 cultivars of different mangoes in the country. This huge variety not only differs in its shape, size and color but also in its scrumptious taste. Though it is not possible to describe all the varieties, today I will talk about the most famous types of Mangoes in India-

Famous Mango types

1. Alphonso
Also known as Hapoo, this is the most expensive variety of Mangoes in India. Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka are its prime producers. It has a fibreless pulp and douses into the mouth as a smooth-creamy mango. This variety of Mango is popular all over the world.
Season: May-June
2. Chaunsa
The name was given by the Muslim Suri Emperor, Sher Shah Suri. It is sweet, juicy and very nutritional. The heavenly sweet taste of this mango will make you lick every drop of its nectar. It is mostly grown in the northern part of India.
Season: July end-August
3. Dasehri
It is the oldest variety of Mangoes in India since its origin can be traced back to almost 200 years in the past. The sweet syrup of this mango makes you suck almost 2-3 mangoes at a time. Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of this variety of Mangoes.
Season: June- July
4. Langra
The mother tree of this variety exists in Varanasi. Since the owner of that tree was unfortunately lame, the mango was thus named as “Langra”. This variety is distinctively fibrous with a unique taste as well. It is majorly grown in Haryana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Season: Mid-July- August
5. Safeda or Banganapalli
These mangoes have a very beautiful yellow color and are sweet and fibreless in taste. It is the most eaten variety of Mangoes which comes straightaway from Andhra Pradesh.
Season: April to June
6. Kesar
This variety of mangoes is precisely consumed raw or used for making Aamrus. It comes from the Ahmedabad region of Gujarat and thus is also known as the Gujarat Kesari. It has a very intense aroma that spreads out in the entire house.
Season: June-Early July
7. Neelam
This is one variety that grows throughout the country. With its specialty in Hyderabad, it is a large-yielding variety of mangoes. Though it arrives early in the season, the best variety is served only in June.
Season: May-July
8. Sindoora
Its reddish color has entitled this variety with the name of Sindoora. Extremely juicy and pulpy in taste, this mango is one of the tastiest mangoes one can ever have.
Season: Mid-May to Mid-June

Bizarre Places in India

Not only for its diversity but India is also known for many bizarre and mystical destinations. Fear, respect, suspense, folklores, curse and many such things make these weird places more mysterious and arouse curiosity. Some of the places are beyond scientific explanation.
Kuldhara – Rajasthan (Ghost Town)
Kuldhara is an abandoned village in Rajasthan and famous as a ghost town. Located at a distance of 15 km from Jaisalmer, the town was once home of Paliwal Brahmins. Though the village has now been completely devastated but one can clearly make out the life back in the 18th century by looking at the ruins of the houses and streets. Paliwal Brahmins left the village at night in 1825 and cursed the place. As per folklore, the minister of the state, Salim Singh fell for the very pretty girl of Paliwal Brahmins in the village. He wanted to have that girl and threatened the villagers. The chief of the village decided to leave the place. On his orders, the villagers too left the village one night and migrated somewhere else. But neither anyone saw them going anywhere nor could figure out where they went.
Chandipur Beach – Hide-and-Seek Beach of Orissa
How will you react if something in front of you disappears? It is both surprising and scary. Chandipur Beach is one such magical place in Orissa that appears with high tide and disappears with low tide. This hide and seek behavior of the beach adds uniqueness and makes it a popular tourist destination. It recedes almost 5 kilometers twice a day. The seashore is bordered by amazing casuarinas trees to create the delightful view of Sunrise and Sunset.
Magnetic Hill or Gravity Hill in Ladakh
Have you ever imagine a vehicle moving uphill with its ignition turned off? It seems quite bizarre and illusionary. Well, you can experience this in Leh at Magnetic or Gravity Hill. The Hill is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik National Highway, about 30 kms from Leh and has extremely strong magnetic power. The power is so strong that it can even pull a car uphill at a speed of 20 km/hr depending upon the type of vehicle. Passing aircrafts have to change the altitude to escape from the magnetic pull. But some feel that it is just an optical illusion and there are no magnetic field or unknown forces behind this.
Thalon Caves – Manipur
Thalon Caves is a way to an unknown world of Hoabinhian culture which is a middle to late Stone Age culture and marked by agricultural village settlements. This of course is not a usual place to visit in India. Located under Tamenglong district, Thalon Caves bring Manipur in the list of most bizarre places in India. Anthropologists and archaeologists from all over the world visit Thalon Caves which were discovered by Maharaja of Manipur, Budhachandra in 1946. The Caves are very dark and gives a spooky experience.
Roopkund Lake or Skeleton Lake
Hundred of human skeletons (300-600) belonging to the 15th century AD can be found at the edge of the Roopkund lake and make it the most frightening lake in India. The Roopkund lake is located in the lap of Trishul massif, Uttarakhand. The place is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and there is no human habitation close to it.
Dhanushkodi – the Lost Town
Dhanushkodi has been derived from two word Dhanush meaning ‘Bow’ and Kodi meaning ‘end’. It is the place located at the southern tip of Rameswaram island in Tamil Nadu where Lord Rama had built a bridge between mainland and Srilanka. After war Vibihishana, brother of Ravana, requested Lord Rama to destroy the bridge which he broke with one of the end of his bow. Till date, many rocks and islets are found in a straight line pointing towards the great epic.
It was once a very flourishing town but the cyclone of 1964 hit it so hard that it killed almost 1,800 people. Following this the place was declared unfit to live by the Government.
Barren Island – Andaman and Nicobar islands
It is the only active volcano in South Asia which for the first time erupted in 1787. Since then it has erupted more than ten times.
Karni Mata Temple
The temple is located in a small town Deshnoke in Rajasthan. The temple is popular for near about 20,000 rats that are revered and roam freely within temple premises. If by chance a rat is killed then it has to be replaced by a rat of gold.
Gravity Defying Palace, Lucknow
This is not a natural but man-made wonder and a bizarre destination to visit in India. The Palace combining the European and the Arabic architecture style was built by the king Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in the 18th century. Interlocking brick work of the main hall makes it popular as “Bhulbhulaiya- a dense maze”.
Balancing Rock of Mahabalipuram
Popularly known as Krishna’s Butter Ball, the Balancing Rock is situated 60 km from Chennai in Mahabalipuram. This is a very huge stone resting on a small rock base. Though the rock does not move a bit but it is hard to stand in front of the rock because of its size and narrow base. It feels as if the rock will topple over you.
